Personally, I think the mouse is a much more elegant solution

The picture is of the control panel to a small nuclear reactor. AFAIK it's from a nuclear sub; that's a salesman, and the setup is a demo model.

The wheels are for the control rods. There are two sets, one for bringing the reactor critical in the first place, the second for controlling its power output. Note the schematic of the coolant loop on the right-hand console panel.

Thanks for pointing that out! When you really look at the photo, it looks 'wrong' somehow, like an early pre-photoshop doctoring or something.
