Shifting Gears

In Heinlein's Starship Troopers, the main character mentions that while on a long march, the troops "rest" by changing the pace from march to double-time and so on.

Reality is that stuff that keeps getting in the way when you're busy being a social butterfly online.

In high school, I had a gym teacher who used to say the same thing.

I'm going to try it for awhile here on Rocket Jones, even though personal experience already tells me that they were both full of crap.

Truth is, I've been trying to keep up with too many plates on too many sticks lately, and I'm tired.

As daughter Mookie noted, I've posted nearly every day for two and a half years.

Weary.

Examining my priorities, I find that there are some adjustments to be made. I've got family to take care of, and school to attend to, and rockets to build, and more going on that never gets mentioned here. I've let some important things slip that never should have, and projects that I'm going to try and salvage before it's too late.

I'm not going away, but the focus here at Rocket Jones will be shifting for a time. I'll be trying that "changing pace" thing that I mentioned above, even though I'm pretty sure that my gym coach was lying to me.

Keep checking back, because I plan to keep posting, but there will be more emphasis on things like the Star Cards series and cult flick and B-movie reviews and a couple of new features that I've been working on.

I will be posting my NaNoWriMo work when it's done. I've got, what, seven days to go? I'm a little better than halfway to the goal of 50,000 words. I'm planning to put a big dent into the remainder this holiday weekend.

Interestingly enough, I was in the middle of writing this post when I discovered that I'd gotten a trackback from Michelle Malkin for the Carnival of the Recipes. So that's one from Instapundit (way back when) and now this. If that isn't encouragement to keep plugging away, I don't know what is.

At some point, I will decide that my batteries are sufficiently recharged and I'll return to my regular Rocket Jonesian blogging, but for now I need a break.

My gym coach also tried to tell me that running was fun. Lying bastard.

One thing that might be good to do (since I'll be checking in every evening regardless) is maybe go through you cache of interesting photos and set 'em up to trickle post. Make it a daily caption contest! You can make a week's worth of posts in a short time. Just a thought.

I get where you're coming from Ted, I put the blog on the back burner the last while because I have more important things to take care of. Plus I was blogging all the time at work and I think it was screwing with my productivity (think?).

Take it easy, and focus on your important things.

Oh yeah, and running is in NO way fun, those f@#$ers were all lying.

Happy Thanksgiving, Ted!

Posted by: Tuning Spork at November 24, 2005 12:35 PM

Hey Ted! Just thought I would drop by and say hello.Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.Went great here.Plus,I gotta say that I know where yer coming from in trying to juggle too much. The four Yahoo groups I watch over is like running a full time day care center as it is.Between moderating cat fights and writing articles and commentaries it's a full time job in itself. That's not to mention things I'm trying to get done here, for someone else, plus model building.A plastic tug model,a 69 Super Bee and five model rockets all going at the same time.I feel yer pain but remember rockets are THE priority!LOL!
Also, you mentioned star cards. That reminds me that I watched the old Veronica Lake movie the other night called I Married a Witch on TCM.It's been since the early to mid 80's since I saw her in a movie. Now I remember why I liked her so much.Yowza!Damb that gal is was spunky! What I can't understand is why no-one liked her as an actress.I've seen much much worse.Too bad that Paramount had to dump all over her career by first making her a big star then turning around and billing her in every sucky script movie they had just to try and save it.No wonder she turned to booze!
Well anyway I just wanted to rant for a second.Take car and hope to see ya on the 3rd.

One does what one must do--I'll still be checking in daily!

Ya do whats ya gots ta do, Ted. I know how it is, trust me. I've backed off on my blogging by an order of magnitude because family stuff has consumed almost any time I have for anything more than the occasional comment. And given what bits you've revealed to us, it goes without saying that you've got some major difficulties taking place and probably make my troubles seem insignificant by comparison--so the fact that you've put as much time into blogging as you have is heroic. But even heroes need a break, hon.

Go, be with your family. Slay dragons and rescue preincesses, be a devoted husband to your ailing wife and a pillar of strength to your children, show the world that it doesn't take a silly electronic site to define your personality. The blog--and all of your faithful readers--will still be here when you get back. *Hug!*
